Commercial radio arrived in Melbourne in 1925 with the launch of 3UZ (now RSN Racing & Sport) followed by 3DB (now KIIS 101.1) in 1927. In the 1930s, four stations launched - 3KZ (now Gold 104.3) in 1930, 3AK (now SEN 1116) in 1931, 3AW in 1932 and 3XY (now Magic 1278) in 1935. Melbourne's seventh and last commercial AM station launched in 1976 with 3MP.

Four years later in 1980, FM radio arrived in Melbourne. Two new stations launched with EON FM (now Triple M) followed 3 weeks later with Fox FM (Hit 101.9). In 1990, 3KZ and 3DB converted to stations now known as Gold 104.3 and KIIS 101.1. Additional commercial FM stations launched in 2001 with Nova 100 and in 2005 with smoothfm 91.5

Melbourne has six commercial FM stations - Triple M, Hit 101.9 Fox, Gold 104.3, KIIS 101.1, Nova 100, smoothfm 91.5 - and five commercial AM stations - RSN Racing & Sport, SEN 1116, 3AW, Magic 1278 and 3MP.
