Newcastle was served by three commercial AM stations. 2HD launched in 1925, 2KO in 1931 and 2NX in 1937.

FM radio arrived in Newcastle in 1989 when 2HD launched its supplementary FM station, New FM. Three years later, Newcastle had three FM stations when 2KO and 2NX converted in 1992.
