Triple M 104.7 is a rock station in Adelaide and is owned by Southern Cross Austereo. The station started its life as 5KA and was Adelaide's second commercial station launching in 1927.
5KA was Adelaide's rock station. Commercial FM arrived in Adelaide in 1980 and Austereo launched SAFM with that format. Losing their audience 5KA experimented with a country music format.
Hoyts Media launched Triple M in Sydney the same year as SAFM. Hoyts was expanding the brand to other main capital cities. In 1987 they bought 5AD with the plan to create Triple M with the FM conversion three years later. But in 1990, 5KA and 5DN were converted instead. Three years later in 1993, Hoyts bought KAFM from Wesgo and the station has become Triple M.The following year, Austereo bought Triple M from Hoyts Media bringing Triple M and SAFM (Hit 107) under the same ownership. Triple M took over the rock format and SAFM (Hit 107) moved to top 40. In 2011 Austereo merged with Southern Cross Media, creating Southern Cross Austereo.
