Triple M 104.9 is a rock station in Sydney and is owned by Southern Cross Austereo. The station was the start of commercial FM radio in Sydney. In August 1980, Triple M 104.9 launched along with 2Day FM (Hit 104.1).
Its callsign was chosen to promote its three songs in a row (triple music) policy.
In the late-1990s, Triple M expanded into sport. It was the first FM station to introduce a sports chat show. At the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games, Triple M was the official FM network.In 1994, Austereo bought Triple M from Hoyts Media bringing Triple M and 2Day FM under the same ownership. This was followed in 2011 when Austereo merged with Southern Cross Media, creating Southern Cross Austereo.
